Ronny Abraham, the relatively new (February 6, 2015) President of the International Court of Justice, started his legal career as an administrative tribunal judge, immediately after graduating from the National School of Administration. He joined the Office of Legal Counsel of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1986 and became an advocate general before the judicial organsof the Council of State until 1998, when he was appointed head of the Legal Affairs Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he advised the French governmenton many issues relating to international law, including genera public international law, international human rights law European Union law and the law of the sea.

From 1998 to 2004 he appeared on behalf of France in the International Court of Justice, the Court of Justice of the European Communities, the European Court of Human Rights and international arbitral tribnals.

 

He was head of the French delegation to the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and head of other French delegations involving various international affairs.

Judge Abraham received a diploma in Advanced Studies in Public Law from the University of Paris before attending the National School of Administration, and was a professor of international law at that university From 1997 to 2005.

He is the author of many articles in books and journals about international law. He gave a lecture on international law that appears now in the Lecture Series of the United Nations Audiovisual Library of International Law.

Judge Abraham was elected to the International Court of Justice in February, 2005 to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Judge Gilbert Guillaume (France), who was a former president of the ICJ. That term ended in February 2009 and he was reelected to a term that will end in 2018.

He was born on September 5, 1951 in Alexandria, Egypt.
